The four phases
Menstrual
Days 1–5. The uterine lining sheds — your period. Energy often dips.
Follicular
Days ~6–13. The body prepares an egg as estrogen rises. Energy tends to climb.
Ovulation
Around Day 14. An egg is released — the most fertile point. Some notice a twinge or higher libido.
Luteal
Days ~15–28. The body readies for a possible pregnancy. PMS symptoms may appear before the next period.
What counts as a typical cycle?
Most cycles run 21–35 days, with periods lasting 2–7 days. Cycles vary from person to person and from month to month — and irregularity is common in the first years after periods begin and in the lead-up to menopause. Tracking a few cycles is the best way to learn your own normal. (Day ranges above assume a 28-day cycle and shift with your own length.)
When to check with a clinician
- Cycles consistently shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days
- Periods lasting more than 7 days, or bleeding heavy enough to soak a pad or tampon every hour
- Bleeding or spotting between periods, or after sex
- Periods that stop for 3+ months when pregnancy isn't the cause
- Pain severe enough to disrupt daily life
